About Judge Shackelford

Early life Downriver

Victoria was born and raised in Southeast Michigan and the Downriver community. She grew up in Romulus and graduated from Belleville High School. She worked as a server while attending college at Washtenaw Community College and Eastern Michigan University. After graduating from Eastern Michigan, she was awarded a full Dean’s Merit Scholarship to the University of Toledo, College of Law. Victoria was an editor on Law Review and graduated Magna Cum Laude.

Legal Career

Victoria dedicated her nearly 20-year legal career to public service. Before taking the bench, she spent a decade working as an attorney for indigent defendants and was on the treatment court team at the 33rd District Court. She then worked as a Wayne County Prosecutor for seven years, where she prosecuted violent crime, including homicides, gun violence, and arson.

Proud to be Taylor's Chief Judge

Victoria Shackelford was appointed judge of the 23rd District Court in November of 2021 and was elected to the position in November 2022. She is now running for a six-year term in this 2024 election. Victoria was appointed Chief Judge by the Michigan Supreme Court. In this role, she oversees court operations while also presiding over a very busy district court docket. She lives in Taylor with her wife, Amy. Together they have three sons and two dogs. Victoria loves to garden, play with her adorable dogs, and raise monarch butterflies – she even has a certified monarch waystation in her back yard.

Community Involvement

Bridging the gap between law and public service, Victoria is committed to improving the relationship between the judiciary and the community.

Judge Shackelford is actively dedicated to her community. She has worked closely with the Taylor Public School district since taking the bench. She initiated Law Day at the Court, a field trip where children learn about the legal system and civics. She also participates in Reading Month, school field trips, and the Court to School program. In 2023, she was the commencement speaker at the 2023 high school graduation.

Judge Shackelford is a board member of Families Against Narcotics. She also is a proud member of the Taylor Goodfellows and Taylor Rotary. She serves as the Director of Legal Education for FAIR Michigan, an advocacy group for women and the LGBTQ community. She oversees the Goodwill Garden in Heritage Park. The garden also allows non-violent offenders to perform dignified community service. Last year, the Goodwill Garden donated over 1,500 pounds of fresh produce to Fish and Loaves, a downriver food bank. She is also a proud sponsor of the Taylor Little League, Music and Art in the Garden at the Taylor Conservatory, and the Taylor Democratic Club Cornroast. She also regularly volunteers at local Veteran events.
